Guided Hike

Friday, July 31st experience the Volcan Mountain Wilderness Preserve (VMWP) under a summer Blue Moon with a sunset/night hike up to the VMWP summit guided by, San Diego County Parks staff. A second full moon in a calendar month is called a blue moon (by modern definition) and they happen rarely—hence the phrase ‘once in a blue moon’. The last blue moon occurred in 2012, and the next after this year will be in 2018.

On Sunday, August 23rd from 9am-Noon, join the Volcan Mountain Foundation staff for a hiking exploration of VMF’s Sky Island Trail located at the upper ‘mile-high’ property. Don’t miss the 4th Annual Julian Film Festival on Friday, August 21st & Saturday, August 22nd!

On Saturday, May 30th join Canyoneers (volunteers with the San Diego Natural History Museum) for an interpretive hike to the scenic summit of San Diego Parks & Rec’s Volcan Mountain Wilderness Preserve (VMWP) starting at 9am. The 2,195-acre preserve offers an array of seasonal wildflowers in oak-pine woodland.

On Sunday, May 31st at 1pm join San Diego County Park staff as they lead the group on a hike around the Kanaka Loop trail through the grassy meadows and oak groves of the Santa Ysabel Preserve-East.  Learn about the history, plants and wildlife of the area, and enjoy a view of the coast from atop Kanaka Flats.

Saturday, July 4th enjoy a bird’s eye view of the many fireworks displays around San Diego County from the summit of the Volcan Mountain Wilderness Preserve.  Leaving the trailhead at 7pm, San Diego County Park Attendant Bill Augustus will discuss the history and geography of the area.

On Saturday, July 25th the Volcan Mountain Foundation joins with the Anza-Borrego Foundation and Nickel Beer Company for summer Hikes & Hops on Volcan Mountain led by VMF's Education Coordinator, Kathleen Beck.

On Saturday, June 13th from 9am-Noon, join the Volcan Mountain Foundation’s Education Coordinator, Kathleen Beck for a hiking exploration of VMF’s Sky Island Trail located at the upper ‘mile-high’ property.

On Saturday, May 16th from 9am-Noon join naturalist, wildflower expert and state parks specialist Larry Hendrickson for a special spring wildflower hike of the Volcan Mountain Foundation's Sky Island Trail located at the upper 'mile-high' property.

On Sunday, April 12th at 10 am join San Diego County Park staff as they leads the group a hike around the Kanaka Loop trail through the grassy meadows and oak groves of the Santa Ysabel Preserve-East.  Learn about the history, plants and wildlife of the area, and enjoy a view of the coast from atop Kanaka Flats.

Saturday, April 11th, join San Diego County Park Attendant, Bill Augustus along the trails of the Santa Ysabel East Preserve.  Enjoy discussions about the history, plants and wildlife of the preserve, while seeing places in the preserve you normally don’t get to see. Meet at the Santa Ysabel Preserve East-Highway 79 staging area at 9am.
